Tolkien Ticked

Friday, February 29th, 2008

In principle I object as strongly as is possible to the ‘translation’ of the nomenclature at all (even by a competent person). I wonder why a translator should think himself called on or entitled to do any such thing. That this is an ‘imaginary’ world does not give him any right to remodel it according to his fancy, even if he could in a few months create a new coherent structure which it took me years to work out. [...] May I say at once that I will not tolerate any similar tinkering with the personal nomenclature. Nor with the name/word Hobbit.

Tolkien, on the progress of the Dutch and Swedish translations of the Lord of the Rings, especially as it related to proper names (via wikipedia).

Madeleine L’Engle, 1918-2007

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

Writer Madeleine L’Engle is dead at 88. She wrote children’s books but she also often wrote about her Christian faith. According to this article, the price of her writing candidly as a Christian “has been steep. She has been perceived as too worldly by some conservative Christian audiences and too dogmatically Christian by some secular audiences.”

Here is an interview of Ms. L’Engle from 1979 by Christianity Today.

Episode III

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

Just got back from watching SWEIII:ROTS! Thanks to Fandango, the wife and I were able to get tickets for the 9:10 a.m. show at the local cineplex. We breezed right in at 9:00 a.m. and got some decent seats. I had the misfortune, however, of sitting beside one of the loudest guys in the theater (he was even humming along to John Williams’ score!). It’s good he quieted down eventually.

Did I like Revenge of the Sith? Let me just say this: don’t believe the hype! This way, with lowered expectations, you may actually be floored by the film. :P

Pre-movie bonus: the trailer for The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was shown. It can be seen here (it’s not up on Quicktime.com yet). Our sons will surely love the movie adaptation which is set to start showing on December 9. I read the book to them - a chapter a night - just last month (with a fake British accent and all, heh).
