- The Islamic Joel Osteen? “Let’s hope that Khaled actually manages to do to Islam what Joel Osteen has attempted to do to the gospel–neuter it.”
In what is called “Operation Candle,” Muslim authorities in Indonesia are providing security to Christian churches in Jakarta during this Christmas season. It is part of the authorities’ goal “to move beyond physical security to include an ideological campaign against violent strains of Islam.”
During Christmas Eve 2000, “29 churches were bombed in an attack blamed on Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a group that has been linked to Al Qaeda.” Earlier this year, three Christian schoolgirls were beheaded by masked attackers in Sulawesi. Other events in 2005 include Islamist mobs closing down 40 unregistered Christian churches, and the Islamic scholars’ council issuing “edicts condemning pluralism and interfaith marriages.” These are acts that are threatening Indonesia’s reputation for “religious tolerance.”
The recent riots in France by disenfranchised Muslim youth reminded me of a comic strip by French artist Moebius* called White Nightmare (”Cauchemar Blanc“) that was published in English in the early ’80s by Heavy Metal magazine. In it, inept French racists bungle their attempt to kill an Arab in the middle of the night. Here are three pages I scanned from the 12-page comic:

The story was based on a real event in 1974 wherein an Arab was beaten and killed “in the middle of a building complex of a suburban housing estate without anyone doing anything about it.” This tells me that the tension between Muslim immigrants and French natives has been simmering for many decades now. The comic was adapted into short film by the director of Gothika early in his career.
*My favorite artist. Do you guys see his influence on my drawing style?
Yet another “marginalized” group identifies with the Macintosh. I’ve read communists, African-Americans, evangelicals, etc. comparing themselves to the underdog platform. It’s the whole “think different” thing, I suppose.
