Laptop Robbery Gets Violent in SF Cafe

Monday, April 10th, 2006

Here’s what the victim had to say about the incident at a wi-fi enabled cafe in San Francisco:

“I looked up, and I saw this guy leaning into me as if he was asking a question,” he said. “I leaned forward, and out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone fiddling with the computer cord. I tried to stand up, and as I stepped back, he stabbed me in the chest.”

So far this type of violence hasn’t happened in other major Bay Area cities like San Jose, Palo Alto and Berkeley. I still feel pretty safe in my corner of suburbia. I may have to get a hold of this, this and this however, if I ever plan to use my iBook in San Francisco.

Related: San Francisco chooses Google and Earthlink to provide the city free wireless internet access. San Francisco already has the most free wi-fi hotspots in the world according to MetroFreeFi’s database.

Google Video, Peanuts and Comcast DVR

Friday, December 23rd, 2005

Remember the kids’ “Peanuts” video from last year? Well, I uploaded it to Google Video last week and it’s now live! It got formatted funny though ’cause it’s got black space to the right and bottom of the video. I think it has to do with the fact that I submitted it as a .mov file instead of the preferred mpeg or mp4 format. I’ll fix it later.

Speaking of Peanuts, I was able to effortlessly record the Charlie Brown Christmas Special (1965) on ABC last Friday, thanks to our new Comcast DVR box. Yup, we got that instead of the Tivo box/service combo since we were alrady Comcast subscribers. We had TFC and GMA thru Comcast for a little while but my wife and I found that we were hardly watching them. So we thought of putting the $19.99 that we were paying to a more worthwhile service. We cancelled the Filipino channels and got the Comcast DVR service instead. Not only did we get the neat recording features (I now know what you Tivo users are raving about) for the same price but we also acquired a couple of dozen more channels.

So anyway, I had the kids watch the Charlie Brown Christmas Special a couple of days later. They liked it and identified with it because they also had to practice and perform Christmas songs (just like the Peanuts characters) for church last Sunday. I liked how Linus quoted Luke 2:8-14 to state the true meaning of Christmas.

Pusit Good

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

Friendster’s a hit in Manila, according to this Wired article. It “first gained traction with the large Filipino community in the San Francisco Bay Area, then spread across the Pacific.” Although part of this community, I have for years not succumbed to signing up at the social-networking site. I share the same sentiment as this quote in the article: “(w)hen you put up a website, your audience is the world.” With my website, I’m a Google search away from anyone who wants to find me (and a few old friends have). I imagine, however, that I’d greatly benefit from Pusit, Friendster’s Filipino answer to Craigslist, if I still lived in Manila.

Google Does X

Wednesday, March 16th, 2005

Google X is virtually identical to regular Google, but features neat icons for Google’s services that enlarge when you move your cursor over them,” according to Mac Observer. The creation by Google Labs is down at the moment, but someone put a mirror of it here. And if that goes down too, here’s a screenshot of it. You’ll just have to imagine the icons animate like OS X Dock icons at 3fps.

I Love Competition

Tuesday, June 15th, 2004

With Yahoo! Mail’s new basic service, I can now send 10MB messages and have 50MB more space while looking at a somewhat sleeker interface. This is no doubt precipitated by better offerings out there.
