One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
Tuesday, April 4th, 2006Former atheist Antony Flew will be receiving an award from Biola University, a Christian institution, “for his lifelong commitment to free and open inquiry and to standing fast against intolerant assaults on freedom of thought and expression.” He is hardly a Christian, however, preferring to call himself a deist.
An aside: I had this post’s title already in mind when the news of Flew’s change of mind broke in 2004. For one reason or another I failed to write about the matter (it was most likely due to being swamped with things to do, as has been happening the past few weeks). But when Flew showed up in the news again, no matter how insignificantly, I saw a chance to use the title here. You’ve got to admit it’s pretty funny, even if it pokes fun at believers. Hey, it goes with the territory, I suppose. We’ve been accused of having a crutch by the likes of Ted Turner and being weak-minded by Jesse “The Body” Ventura; we’re intoxicated by the opiate of the masses; and we’ve been called fools for Christ.
Another aside: Anthony Flew was C.S. Lewis’s contemporary (yes, he’s that old) and it just so happens the kids and I are watching the Chronic(what?!)cles of Narnia DVD, which came out today, boyeee!
