Identifying with the Macintosh
Tuesday, March 25th, 2003In an article referenced in the previous post, we had a writer liken a Macintosh user to a Communist. Elsewhere, the late Rodney O. Lain, the “iBrotha,” drew parallelisms between the Macintosh and being a racial minority. Why do some marginalized groups identify with the Macintosh? Surely, the status of the Mac as the underdog of the computer industry has fostered these comparisons, but devotion to Apple computers itself has been described as cult-like.
The Mac vs. PC debate has been compared to a religious war. But indications show that this war is waning, especially after the introduction of OS X. Interestingly, somethingawful.com has attempted to find an analogy between religious fanaticism and Mac fanaticism in connection with the Christian Macintosh Users Group. Somethingawful.com’s comments, however, have turned out to be contrived and uninformed. Additionally, the expected barrage of vindictive e-mail directed at CMUG coming from somethingawful.com readers never came to pass.
Personally, I’ve been guilty in the past of defending my platform of choice more than my faith. Getting all worked up about temporal things was rather silly.
Matt. 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
