  • Child-in-Car Deaths Rise Dramatically “Some studies suggest that the safety movement to place children in the back seat of cars (instead of the front seat, where children were much more visible to drivers), is a possible reason.”

Bambi vs. the Wife

Sunday, December 19th, 2004

On her last day of finals, as she was leaving school Thursday night, my wife hit a deer. The less-than full-grown deer came out of nowhere and it was too late to avoid it. My wife’s fine but unfortunately the deer didn’t survive. My wife called 911 but there was a wait (could you imagine that?). So she left the scene… to go shopping at the mall. To her credit, she said she was so shaken up that she shopped in a dazed stupor. She managed to call me while on a short break at the food court to let me know what had happened. I insisted on having the highway patrol know about the dead deer on the road. I had access to the local police station’s phone number so I made the phone call (forget 911). After telling the dispatcher about the accident, she told me all I had to do was call our insurance company. I told her it was not necessary since all our car got was a broken parking light. I let her know that the dead deer may pose a hazard to other motorists so she asked for the accident’s approximate location. Click on the link below to see a shot of our license plate with bits of “evidence” (click at your own discretion but it’s certainly mild compared to what you’d see on CSI):

Nasty Tumble

Tuesday, June 24th, 2003

I had a nasty spill en route to work on my bike this morning. It’s quite embarrassing to reveal the reason behind my fall.

Well, ok, bees.

All two of them.

Or maybe it was just one.

But he was fast.

I tried to outrun him but he was hot on my trail. I panicked and lost control of my bike. Next thing I knew I was flat on my face with my bike underneath me. I have a nasty scrape on my left forearm, my left palm is bruised up, my right knee is cut, my left thigh is throbbing and my rib cage hurts.

Funny thing is just moments before I was pondering how a coin-operated newspaper rack near my work has remained devoid of newspapers for several weeks now because a swarm of wasps has taken it over. I guess that just heightened my fear when I saw the bee go after me.

Comedy and Tragedy on 880

Thursday, June 5th, 2003

Yesterday on my carpool ride home, the already sluggish traffic slowed to a crawl on Highway 880 by McCarthy Ranch. Something was obviously hindering the two middle lanes from moving forward as I saw a vast expanse of space in front of the cars ahead. As we maneuvered around the bottleneck, I caught a glance of about eight ducklings waddling along lane number two. The mother duck was nowhere around.

This morning in the opposite direction on my way to work on an Amtrak motorcoach, we came upon an accident. The cops and paramedics were already at the scene. A scrunched-up sedan was pinned by a delivery truck against the center divide. I hope and pray nobody was seriously hurt.

Accident

Monday, January 13th, 2003

I have a view of Highway 101 from my cubicle here at work. Looks like there’s an injury accident out there. Paramedics and the Fire Dept. are on the scene right now.
