Charlie Chaplin Days

Charlie Chaplin Days

Charlie Chaplin made a few movies in the historic Niles District of Fremont in 1915. Charlie Chaplin Days is a two-day event held in Niles every year celebrating Chaplin’s brief stay making films locally. The family and I started our day late last Saturday so we got to the event an hour before it ended. When we arrived at the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum, we caught the tail-end of The Tramp. A Japanese film crew interviewed some of the audience members after the movie was over.

Charlie Chaplin Days

I was expecting the street to be teeming with Charlie Chaplin lookalikes but I only saw a handful. Here are a few that I saw. I failed to take a photo of the most genuine-looking one. I suppose if we had gone much earlier there would have been more around.

Do you know of a get-rich-quick scheme in the Philippines that actually works? Well, one is to turn in local terrorists to the authorities. The U.S. State Department, through the Rewards for Justice program, will pay informants handsomely for their efforts. Witness the pictures of tipsters being handed their reward on two separate occasions: Set 1, Set 2. Like the nifty suitcases filled with cash? It’s just like in the movies, no?

Philippine Internet Cafes

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

I didn’t know that surfing in Philippine internet cafes was not safe until Mark told me during our meet-up. Apparently some have keylogging software installed on their machines, which “capture your keystrokes, including your account number and PINs.” Do you know how many internet cafes I’ve used to check my e-mail and to post weblog entries during our trip to the Philippines last year? LOTS. The following are only a few of the many I’ve visited:

Thankfully, there are no signs that any of my personal information has been compromised. You’ll know it has if you see posts here raving about Pinoy Big Brother.
