The Peso on eBay
The news that some of the 100-peso bills with a misspelling of Philippine President Arroyo’s name are being sold on eBay is interesting enough but it’s the last sentence of the Reuters news item that caught my eye:
The peso, often hurt by political uncertainty, has been the best-performing currency in Asia this year, trading at six-month highs around 53.4 to the dollar.
That’s good news, ain’t it?

Is this sad: 1983 the exchange rate was roughly 10 to 1. I remember because we were on vacation in the US and my dad kept reminding me things weren’t so cheap, just make sure to add a couple of zeroes to get the right amount. Around 1969 or ‘70, the exchange rate was 2 to 1. My mom and dad went on vacation to the US and she kept a log of the money they spent and exchanged and she wrote down the rate.

Yes! Before we left for the US in 1983, the exchange rate was 9 to 1. Back then, one jeepney ride was only sixty centavos, pandesal was ten centavos each, same as the fishballs…
