Contrasts

This photo appearing in a BBC article (via brownpau) on the Philippines’ poverty divide shows “a shocking contrast of rich and poor.” I encountered many contrasting images such as this in the Philippines. The following photo taken in Olongapo juxtaposes the area’s past and present.

Jollibee and Apo

House in Bataan  House in Manila
During our Philippine trip, my family and I experienced different types of living situations. We stayed in both houses pictured above.

Bataan  Alabang
One week we’re eating kamayan-style in the rural countryside, the next week we’re having lunch at the exclusive Alabang Country Club.

Sari-sari store  Alabang Town Center
Goods in the Philippines are either sold at the humble sari-sari store or at the many upscale malls in Manila.

Bakod 1  Bakod 2
The makeshift fence on the left hides squatters’ homes. Just across the street, one will find this concrete wall shielding millionaires’ homes from everyone else.

Meals are more enjoyable with one leg up, it seems. :D

Yes, I wholly agree! A leg while dining in gusto provides for better blood circulation whilst chowing down one’s meal. :-P

This is the stark reality that we have to live by as Filipinos.

In my opinion, education is the answer to solve the mirage problems we have (caused by crazy politicians). I believe that if 90% of our citzenry are properly educated, then we’ll have better leaders elected to “serve us”.

The root of all these problems is the fact that Filipinos don’t look at their heritage. They are not proud of what they are. And they are under the curse of corruption. The answer is Christ which they professed they have but not really.
