Island Confusion

Saturday, May 28th, 2005

The narrator in the opening animation of the new arts and culture website Canvas.ph says he was “born and raised in Hawaii.” His distinct Manileño accent betrays him though. But I suppose this gaffe is easily forgiven since we island folk share so much in common. When the boys and I ate at Ohana Hawaiian BBQ for the first time last week, I noticed most of the staff were pinoy. I guess they lend some semblance of authenticity. Most of the patrons were also pinoy. Undoubtedly, entrées such as Spam Musubi and Grilled Spam Saimin have something to do with this.

Nerds as Terpsichoreans

Saturday, May 21st, 2005

Last year, we witnessed wacky Napoleon Dynamite get down to the funky music of Jamiroquai. Not since Pee-Wee Herman’s Tequila Dance have we been this much enthralled by a sissy strutting his stuff on stage. Dweebs probably dream of gaining acceptance by having their unique style of dance somehow become popular all of a sudden (remember Patrick Dempsey in Can’t Buy Me Love?). Some shun fame altogether, however. Gary Brolsma, who gained notoriety for his hilarious Numa Numa vidcap, has become an “unwilling and embarrassed Web celebrity.”

A lesser-known nerdy dance routine from 2004 that deserves a second look is found in the Kings of Convenience video for “I’d Rather Dance With You.” Erlend Oye’s performance eclipses that of Napoleon Dynamite in my opinion. From the Royal Tenenbaum nod in the beginning, to the silly dance lesson in the middle, to the recital as denouement, the song and dance number expresses endearingly the sweet revenge of a geeky dancer.

Episode III

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

Just got back from watching SWEIII:ROTS! Thanks to Fandango, the wife and I were able to get tickets for the 9:10 a.m. show at the local cineplex. We breezed right in at 9:00 a.m. and got some decent seats. I had the misfortune, however, of sitting beside one of the loudest guys in the theater (he was even humming along to John Williams’ score!). It’s good he quieted down eventually.

Did I like Revenge of the Sith? Let me just say this: don’t believe the hype! This way, with lowered expectations, you may actually be floored by the film. :P

Pre-movie bonus: the trailer for The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was shown. It can be seen here (it’s not up on Quicktime.com yet). Our sons will surely love the movie adaptation which is set to start showing on December 9. I read the book to them - a chapter a night - just last month (with a fake British accent and all, heh).

Divs or Leaves?

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

Every Wednesday, in between dropping off son no. 2 at the sitter’s and waiting for son no. 1 to come home from school, I have a bit of free time. Today, I didn’t know whether to do some web work or do some yard work within that timeframe. The web work I had in mind involves bringing one of the old websites I maintain up to the standards set forth by the W3C. This means removing unnecessary nested tables, eliminating 1-pixel gif hacks, and ridding the code of any hint of divitis or classitis. Yard work on the other hand involves mowing the lawn, plucking weeds from the garden bed, snipping out-of-control rose stems, and sweeping away dried leaves. Doing these things pretty much brings our front yard up to the standards set forth by our neighborhood.

I ended up doing yard work. Just the thought of any more jeers and sneers from my more conscientious neighbors is unbearable. *looks around suspiciously as he takes off his tinfoil hat*
