Girl Scout Cookies

Saturday, January 29th, 2005

It’s Girl Scout Cookie season. We’ve already ordered a batch of cookies from my co-worker and from an old neighbor visiting the area. Of course, they were selling them for their daughters. This article calls the whole enterprise “stressful.” I may not call it that but it’s so hard saying “no” that we may end up with a cupboard full of Samoas, Thin Mints, Lemon Coolers and Tagalongs.

I’m sure that last one, Tagalongs, caught the attention of you Pinoys out there. Sounds too much like Tagalog, no?* These bestsellers are chocolate-covered peanut butter cookies. Um, yeah, light brown on the inside and dark brown on the outside. Ehe.

*although with Tagalog the emphasis is on the GA

Bus Wi-Fi

Friday, January 28th, 2005

I’m posting this from an Amtrak bus parked in front of the train station just for the heck of it. Or as they would say in ‘pinas, “‘La lang.”

Update: oh, just to clarify, online access was made available from an unsecured hotspot outside the bus.

We’re a Host Family

Monday, January 24th, 2005

It all happened so fast but we are now host to a foreign exchange student from South Korea. We were approached last Wednesday by a lady looking for families in the area who are willing to host foreign exchange students. One particular student was due to arrive on Monday from South Korea but his original host family was struck by a sudden emergency and could not take him. By Friday, my father-in-law had agreed to host him and signed the papers. The 16-year-old student will be going to the high school a block away from the house. Today, he arrived with the program coordinator who picked him and another student up from the airport. She briefed us on the hosting experience, had my father-in-law sign some more papers, and went on her way.

The tired lad is resting right now. We scrambled to empty and clean a room previously occupied by my wife’s nephew and gave the room to him. At such short notice, the emptied contents of the room are sitting in the middle of the house in several boxes. The next few days will be busy as we do some more cleaning and rearranging of stuff. We’re a little anxious but surely excited about the prospect of being a host family for a year to a student from a far-away land.

Digital Pinay

Thursday, January 20th, 2005

A whole lot of brouhaha is buzzing in pinoy online circles over a “glorified beauty pageant” being organized by the Philippine Computer Society.

When I saw the subject line “The Search for Digital Pinay 2005 is on!” in my inbox a few days ago, I thought it was a search for virtual CG women, you know, like a contest similar to this. A search for the pinay Simone, if you will. Or even a contest to create a virtual spokesperson like this site provides.

Hmmm, maybe the organizers should rethink the whole thing and reformat the contest as outlined above. It may help them out of the hole they dug for themselves. Or not. *ducks*

Jaywalkers Get Wet Blanket in Manila

Tuesday, January 18th, 2005

Judging from the photo provided, it looks like the blanket is soaked in kanal water. Ew.

Original MSN article now gone.
