Haircut

Sunday, November 14th, 2004

I’ve had my head shaved on and off for the past ten years. Initially I did it for the convenience of not having to spend precious minutes on my hair every morning. Additionally, having a bald head was not exactly out-of-vogue. Until yesterday, I’ve had my hair grow out for the past year and a half. I chose to revert to a shaved head again, but this time around it is because of my losing battle with male pattern baldness. The coming cold winter chill be damned, I’ll never resort to any variation of the comb-over, even if minor and discrete.

So there I was yesterday, negotiating with Mr. Hairdresser whether to use a No. 1 attachment for my whole head. Mr. Hairdresser, fearing for the drastic change I was about to make, suggested that we use No. 1 for the sides and No. 3 for the top. I agreed. As he was putting the finishing touches on this oh-so-complicated cut, he asked something that gave me pause. He asked whether I wanted my eyebrows trimmed. Apparently my brows have grown to Fu-Manchu proportions and needed to be mowed down. I said fine and thought, “but I draw the line at having them plucked.”

I hope the day that Mr. Hairdresser tells me my ear hair needs a trimming is the day that scientists have figured out a way to transplant them onto my scalp.

In all seriousness, a passage quoted by our guest pastor this morning reminded me that our earthly bodies are merely temporal: “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are acheiving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”

Comment Spam Rationale

Friday, November 12th, 2004

A spammer attempts to rationalize his actions in this comment spam I just received:

What I’m talking about is interjecting ads within the aggegated (sic) content of the community blog entries. Sort of like the way commercials are added to your favorite TV shows. The individual blog entries is (sic) the community’s “show” and the added advertising goes towards paying for the “show”

Well, if that’s the case, then show me the money!

Update: Ok, should’ve read that more carefully. Did a Google search and apparently the spammer took a comment from someone else’s blog entry and used it here.

Package Designer's Toolbox

Yesterday I received this huge box from Package Design Magazine labeled The Package Designer’s Toolbox. It contained numerous cleverly designed packaging such as CD jackets, box template cut-outs, cosmetic containers, beer cans, water bottles, etc. As a designer, I’d be normally delighted in receiving freebies like these. They serve as wonderful items of inspiration when creativity runs dry. As I sat there examining the items, however, all I wanted to do was to identify them by recyclable material category and get them sorted for the next trash pick-up. Sad to say, these carefully crafted and well-thought out pieces have been reduced to garbage. My domestication transformation must be complete.

Live the Life

Live the Life cover

I feel like Ed McMahon for Publisher’s Clearing House for touting magazines two entries in a row but I’ll go ahead and do it anyway, because this one’s worth it.

Those in the Philippines, watch out for Live the Life Magazine, a Christian magazine aimed at Filipino teenagers. It is the brainchild of blogger Ganns of Superblessed, who quit his academic job to pursue what he believes is a higher calling. He’s gathered together a cadre of talented writers, artists and designers to produce a hip magazine with content that resonates with today’s youth. It comes out on newsstands on November 27.
