AirPort Express

Monday, August 16th, 2004

I’m awaiting Part 2 of Highs and Lows with Apple’s AirPort Express at NetworkWorldFusion. My experience with Apple’s portable wireless base station/USB print server/media player is similar to that of the author. I’ve been able to stream music wirelessly from the Mac in the home office to remote speakers in the bedroom. Creating a new wireless network is no problem either. Extending the range of the existing network is a no-go, however. But it’s the least of what I need from this versatile gadget. Extending my 802.11g network any further would mean encroaching into my neighbors’ airspace anyway. Having the ability to create wireless networks virtually anywhere is what I like most about this device.

I got my AirPort Express from my boss who was giving away goodies during a business presentation last week. It’s like one of those gifts you are happy to receive but otherwise wouldn’t buy out of necessity.

The Silicon Valley Tourist

Yahoo! sign

The overwhelming interest generated by a link to photos I took of the Apple campus has prompted me to finally post pictures I was saving for later. I introduce to you The Silicon Valley Tourist, a gallery of Silicon Valley signage I took over a span of several weeks.* A boring set of snapshots perhaps to some but I’m sure it would interest a couple of you out there. The album is by no means complete. I plan to visit Google, Adobe, Intel (which is really tough to take a picture of), HP and others soon.

You may be wondering why I frame the company signs between my index finger and my thumb. Well, I figured that’s the only way I could include myself in the picture. At first I thought about using the Pets.com sock puppet or the Geekman action figure as my prop. But in this post-9/11 era, holding up an indiscernible object with a camera pointed at an American high-tech icon would only cause a swarm of SWAT team members to surround me in a matter of seconds. So I settled for my ultra-portable, less suspicious-looking appendages. Besides, there’s something empowering about holding Corporate America between one’s fingers. Mwuhahaha… squish, squish

*for a true tour of historic Silicon Valley, I direct you to this guy.

Update: Adobe pics are up!

The Mullet. Will it?

Saturday, August 7th, 2004

Come back, I mean. I sure hope not. But Ed Santos wants it back. His website RockDaMullet has garnered him an internet cult following. Although a big part of me wants his site shut down forever, a small part of me wants it to succeed. If the 80s fashion faux pas does come back, it will make reminiscing over my high school pictures a little more bearable. Besides the cat is out of the bag anyway.

Thunderbirds are Go, Again

Thursday, August 5th, 2004

You who are disappointed with the sorry excuse of a remake of Thunderbirds put out by Universal Studios, don’t despair. The creators of South Park took it upon themselves to make a rightful send-up of the classic 60s TV show. Behold, Team America, World Police.
