Pasalubong
My sister surprised us with some goodies from her trip to the Philippines earlier this month. She got me three Filipino comic books drawn with a decidedly manga flair: Maynilad, Maria Makiling and Alat sa Dagat. The children’s books went to the boys. My wife got a slab of Choc-Nut and a big bag of cornick, which I’ve already brought to work and halfway scarfed down in one afternoon. Thanks, sis!

The Passion

Wednesday, February 25th, 2004

I’m off to see The Passion of the Christ today, on opening day. I bought our tickets last night from Fandango for this evening’s showing. According to early reviews, the movie is graphic in its depiction of Jesus’ last hours leading to his crucifixion, a conscious move Mel Gibson took in order to drive the film’s message. When violence is central to the film’s thrust, it’s not hard to see why people ask, “Who Killed Jesus?” (as Newsweek did on its cover last week). It is puzzling though how the media is pandering to those who like to see the film as a “blame game” of sorts when the question doesn’t even enter the believer’s mind. There is no outrage about “man’s inhumanity to man.” Nor man’s “inhumanity” to God. It is clear from the Scriptures that Jesus gave His life willingly.

“The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life–only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

RSS Test

Tuesday, February 24th, 2004

I’m trying out NetNewsWire Lite, a free news aggregator for the Mac (thanks for the heads up, kyo!). If anyone’s interested here’s my RSS feed. One concern about making blog content available through RSS is the lack of tools in tracking RSS reader usage. Well, apparently a company is already developing such a tool. And of course, in the interest of revenue-making, another company is already thinking of delivering ads along with your RSS content.

Safari Tip

Monday, February 23rd, 2004

My Safari browser (v1.2) has slowed down considerably since I upgraded to OS X 10.3 Panther. Well, I discovered today that unchecking all checkboxes in the AutoFill section of the Preferences menu gets Safari back to its normal, speedy state. Turning off all unused languages under the Get Info command helps as well.

Red-Nosed

Friday, February 20th, 2004

red-nosedI got the red spot on my nose as a result of over-agressive snot-blowing. My thumb slipped from a comfortable grip on my nose and scraped off the upper epidermal layer of the tip of my nose. I guess it was time to cut my fingernails.

I’ve had a cough/cold for three weeks now. I finally saw a doctor today. He said I had bronchitis. He prescribed me antibiotics and robitussin with codeine. The pharmacist told me the antibiotics causes diarrhea and the codeine causes constipation, which balances out, I suppose.
