Weekend Roundup

Sunday, August 10th, 2003

Friday
Went to bible study at Chris’s house. I haven’t been to one in a while mostly due to lack of transportation. But now it’s possible to attend because of the generous donation by Kuya Bien who gave me an old Ford Taurus that wasn’t being used by anyone in his household. Previously, I’d get around by bike or public transportation.

It was refreshing studying God’s word that Friday night. Although the bible study was quite basic, I needed to hear all of it once again. My personal bible reading had become inconsistent and this is just what I needed in order to get going with renewed interest and enthusiasm.

Saturday
The fam and I went to Pistahan 2003 at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco. This is the better of the two Filipino festivals held yearly in San Francisco. The focus of Pistahan is more on culture and the arts whereas the other centers on entertainment and entertainers. The wife, however, still had an opportunity to have her picture taken with Paolo Montalban of Cinderella and American Adobo* fame. Pics will be posted later on. It’ll be interesting how it turns out - I used a disposable camera since my digicam is out of commission.

Sunday
After church, we travelled all the way to Antioch for a kid’s birthday party held at Prewett Water Park. Had the opportunity to play in the pool with the boys. We enjoyed the water slides although the 3-year old clung on to me most of the time. My oldest son’s swimming lessons are paying off.

*I turned the dvd off after about half an hour of watching this movie. Its dialogue and pretentiousness absolutely made me cringe. I should probably give it another chance. At least it was shot in good film stock. :)

Will the Real Mr. Bocobo Please Stand Up?

Thursday, August 7th, 2003

In his blog, Dean Jorge Bocobo describes himself as “a physicist by training and profession (Harvard, 1980).” He is also a writer for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Interestingly, there was a Jorge Bocobo who lived from 1886 to 1965 and was dean of the U.P. College of Law. Does anyone know if they’re related?

What actually struck me as memorable about “Jorge Bocobo” was a character by the same name played by lanky comedian George Javier on the Filipino comedy show Todas in the ’70s. He would introduce himself this way, “Hi my name is Jorge Bocobo. Bocobo is spelled: B as in BOCOBO, O as in OCOBO, C as in COBO, O as in OBO, B as in BO and O as in OLRAYT!!”

(Thanks to Mark for the mention. I actually learned of Mr. Bocobo’s site through TWF)

Frazetta Documentary

Thursday, August 7th, 2003

Frazetta: Painting with Fire is a documentary on the life and work of sword-and-sorcery artist Frank Frazetta. The trailer for the film opens with a spectacular 3D rendition of one of his more popular Conan the Barbarian paintings. The movie is now available on VHS. Here’s why it’s not out on DVD yet.

(The production of the film was done entirely on the Mac, by the way)

Horatio’s

Wednesday, August 6th, 2003

The wife and I enjoyed a quiet dinner by the bay at Horatio’s at the San Leandro Marina this evening. “Quiet” as in no kids in tow. It’s been a while since the two of us had a date like this. Thanks to my mom-in-law for watching the little ones for us.

My boss actually paid for the whole seafood dinner to show his appreciation for the late and weekend hours I’ve spent at work lately. What a guy, eh? Although he says it’s really more for the wife who has endured those days and nights taking care of the kids all by herself while I was away.
