Will the Real Mr. Bocobo Please Stand Up?
In his blog, Dean Jorge Bocobo describes himself as “a physicist by training and profession (Harvard, 1980).” He is also a writer for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Interestingly, there was a Jorge Bocobo who lived from 1886 to 1965 and was dean of the U.P. College of Law. Does anyone know if they’re related?
What actually struck me as memorable about “Jorge Bocobo” was a character by the same name played by lanky comedian George Javier on the Filipino comedy show Todas in the ’70s. He would introduce himself this way, “Hi my name is Jorge Bocobo. Bocobo is spelled: B as in BOCOBO, O as in OCOBO, C as in COBO, O as in OBO, B as in BO and O as in OLRAYT!!”
(Thanks to Mark for the mention. I actually learned of Mr. Bocobo’s site through TWF)

He actually spelled his name as Dyords Javier. Incidentally I do have a good friend from high school named Jorge Javier.

You know, I had the exact same question runs through my mind whenever I see Mr. Bocobo’s byline. I’ve always wondered where Dyords Javier pick up the name of the character.

I think they are indeed related.
And thanks for the Dyords memory — I loved that show. (For five points, what did the letters T.O.D.A.S. stand for?)

Hey, that’s a question from your Pinoy Quiz, isn’t it? Could it be that each letter represents each cast member’s name? Let’s see, is it something like: T for Tito (was he in it?), S for Spanky Rigor…
Man, I give up. I’ll have to look it up in your site.

“Dean” Jorge Bocobo (1886-1965), first Filipino dean of the UP College of Law, is Dean Jorge Bocobo’s (the blogger and newspaper columnist) grandfather.
I mistook him for the old man, whom I found out had passed away a long time ago, so I asked him.
BTW, his father Isreal died 4 days ago.

Dean Jorge Bocobo, or Deanie is one of seven children of Israel Bocobo who recently passed away last Aug 17 2003. He is also one of several grandchildren of the late Dr. Jorge Cleofas Bocobo of Gerona, Tarlac, who died on July 23 1965.

Yes, they are related. Jorge Bocobo (UP President) is the father of Israel Bocobo (who is Dean Jorge Bocobo’s father who happens to be MY grandfather as MY father is HIS son too.) haha.
