100 Best High Schools Less One

I read with personal interest the Newsweek cover story The 100 Best High Schools in America. My alma mater, Lowell High School, has been awarded California Distinguished School several times in the past and has ranked high nationally among high schools with AP Programs. But curiously, Lowell, the oldest high school in the west, was absent from the list. “Did recent budget cuts finally do Lowell in?” I thought. Well, according to this, the author of the Newsweek story “has decided to exclude from the list every public high school that admits half (or) more of its students based upon grades or test scores.” Singling out high schools (that are otherwise excellent) because of an admissions policy is hardly a good criteria for exclusion, in my opinion. It assumes that students cease to be challenged once admitted. If Lowell had not been excluded, it would have ranked no. 22 on the national list.
