A Mournful Day in the Neighborhood

Thursday, February 27th, 2003

Mister Rogers passed away early this morning. My 6 year old loved watching his show when he was a toddler. Now my dilemma: how to break the news to him. Growing up, we had “Uncle Bob’s Lucky Seven Club,” roughly a Filipino equivalent of Mr. Fred Rogers’s show.

Smells like the Sun

Wednesday, February 26th, 2003

Because I now take public transportation regularly, I expose my poor self to the elements. The other day when my wife picked me up from the BART station, she said, “Amoy araw ka (you smell like the sun).” Now this doesn’t mean I smelled Tide-fresh. Rather it means I smelled like the outdoors. You know, that smell. In the Filipino vernacular, “smelling like the sun” means someone has been walking under the hot sun and smells like it. Well, on that particular day O picked me up, the sun wasn’t out and I hardly sweated. I simply spent some time outdoors. I attribute this smell to pollutants, particularly automobile emissions, that cling to clothes and give you that outdoorsy scent that gets mistaken for body odor (ha, how’s that for explaining that away?). Besides, has anybody taken a whiff of the sun before?

Public Transpo

Thursday, February 20th, 2003

This is my second day taking public transportation. My car broke down during before the Christmas holidays. I was driving my parents’ car for a while when they went to the Philippines. I had it for a month until they got back. Fortunately for us, my parents were playing travel tag with my wife’s parents. So I then borrowed my in-laws’ car. But alas, they’re back as well. So now I have no choice but to take the bus to work. Tomorrow I’m trying the Ace Train which is quite a fast commute (20 mins from Fremont to Santa Clara).

I’m blogging from Kinko’s* in Fremont. I’m taking a breather from walking from the BART station. I don’t remember walking this much in recent memory. There’s nothing like dashing from one bus stop to another, especially when I have four connecting rides to take just to get home. This may just be the exercise I need in order to get myself in shape. Ok, gotta go - I’ve got one more bus ride to take…

Rediscovery of a Pinoy Web Classic

Thursday, February 20th, 2003

I was delighted to come across The Wily Filipino, formerly Tamad!, home of the classic “The Wit and Wisdom of Imelda Marcos”. I was introduced to Benito M. Vergara, Jr.’s site a few years back through Ken Ilio’s comprehensive list of Filipino sites. I’m glad he’s kept the site alive after all these years — he’s even updated it with a blog!

Microsoft buys Virtual PC

Wednesday, February 19th, 2003

Aaahh. More acquisition news this week.

Personally, I use Virtual PC to open PC files on my Mac it otherwise can’t (AVIs, EXEs, etc.). The last time Microsoft bought a Mac-friendly company, it delayed the Mac version of its product. Halo was originally going to be released first on the Mac until Microsoft decided to buy Bungie, makers of Halo. Microsoft subsequently redirected the efforts of the Halo development team to release the game first on the XBox console system. The Mac version (or the PC version, for that matter) is nowhere to be seen two years after its announcement. In the meantime, Halo 2 is already coming out on the XBox.
